Tinh dầu tràm trà (TTO) được chiết xuất bằng phương pháp lôi cuốn hơi nước ở 100oC trong 100 phút với hiệu suất khoảng 2,6%. TTO thu được có dạng chất lỏng trong suốt, màu từ vàng nhạt đến không màu và có mùi hơi cay nhẹ. Sau đó, tinh dầu này được kiểm tra khả năng kháng các chủng vi khuẩn Bordetella bronchiseptica phân lập từ chó có triệu chứng hô hấp. Trong số 45 mẫu bệnh phẩm thu được, 10 chủng Bordetella bronchiseptica đã được chọn lọc bằng PCR. Kết quả kháng sinh đồ cho thấy các chủng này có khả năng kháng nhiều loại kháng sinh phổ biến trong thú y, đặc biệt là amoxicillin (70%) và cephalosporin (80%). Tinh dầu tràm trà ức chế vi khuẩn Bordetella bronchiseptica ở nồng độ từ 5 đến 60 mg/mL với đường kính vòng kháng khuẩn từ 7,33 đến 23,33 mm được xác định bằng phương pháp khuếch tán trên môi trường thạch đĩa. Nồng độ ức chế tối thiểu (MIC) của tinh dầu tràm trà trên chủng Bordetella bronchiseptica Bb3 và Bb4 lần lượt là 0,08 và 0,04 mg/mL. Nồng độ diệt khuẩn tối thiểu (MBC) đều là 0,156 mg/mL trên cả hai chủng. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy tinh dầu tràm trà có tiềm năng trở thành một phương pháp hỗ trợ điều trị an toàn và hiệu quả đối với bệnh hô hấp ở chó do Bordetella bronchiseptica gây ra. Tuy nhiên, cần có thêm các nghiên cứu in vivo để khẳng định và đánh giá toàn diện hơn hiệu quả này.
